Tutoring Programs
Elementary School Tutors
We currently have 45 tutors volunteering at schools in Los Altos and Mountain View, from kindergarten through 6th grade.
For many of these students, English is their second language. In many cases, their parents do not speak English in the home, making it difficult for these students to progress as rapidly as they should. They are struggling in class and the teacher is not able to spend their individual time with them.
This is where a tutor is so helpful. Working one to one with a student for half an hour gives them such a boost in either reading, or math, or science or homework. Most of our tutors work with two different students, half an hour each. Some tutors help the teacher in kindergarten. The teacher gives direction as to what the tutor will be focusing on that day.
Our schools are suffering from severe budget cuts and are most appreciative of help from community volunteers. What could be more rewarding than helping a child all year and starting to see their improvement? Most of these students are eager to learn when given a chance.
• are needed in Los Altos and Mountain View schools
• help for a minimum of one hour per week
• are under the direction of a teacher
• help with reading or math, but there are other opportunities
• are filled with a sense of satisfaction when their student does well
Intermediate School Tutors
Tutoring and Mentoring in the Middle Schools
Grades sixth, seventh and eighth or seventh and eighth, depending on the school, define the middle school years. This is a time of significant change for these students.
It is a time when elementary students go from a single teacher who can balance the homework load for all subjects, to as many as six teachers, each with their own definition of homework. Subjects such as world history, pre-algebra, chemistry, biology and the ability to write a five paragraph essay are introduced.
The need for organization and time management come into play. This is also the time when adolescents move from play dates to the beginning of more mature relationships. This is a wonderful and complex time when the help of a tutor or mentor can make a huge difference.
High School Tutors
High School tutors are needed at Los Altos High School, Mountain View High School and Alta Vista High School.
During school hours, tutors help high school students with reading, writing, math, or any subject that is the specialty of the tutor.
