The Perks of Tutoring – Your Tutee Isn’t the Only One Leaving With Something to Gain PDF  | Print |

traci_newell_tnTutoring through Partners for a New Generation is a rewarding experience. While the student you are tutoring may not always show their appreciation, you know you are making a difference in that student’s life. The student I tutored last year had difficulty seeing any assignment through until the end. I would come twice a week and study with him after school, just making sure that we could finish a whole assignment from start to finish. While he was an adolescent and tried not to show his emotions, I could visually see the relief in his face after we finished an assignment as he began to feel a bit of the weight lift off his shoulders.

Traci Newell - Volunteer TutorMy tutee came from a single parent family, and I could tell his mother probably didn’t have much time to keep track of his schoolwork. It was rewarding to see his grades increase, even slightly, and to know that I had something to do with that. It was also put a smile on my face to be able to work with the dedicated staff at his junior high and to see they genuinely cared about him and his future.

Tutoring is not only rewarding, it is challenging. I found myself just as challenged academically as my student was and I found the assignments exciting. At first I was resigned to work on assignments outside of my strengths, but I soon found myself looking forward to working on math and science assignments as I found myself remembering a lot of my own education.

Ultimately it feels wonderful to share your knowledge and most importantly, share your will for someone else to succeed.
